Check these by eye
A file check can't read your picture. Spotify's content policy and guidelines ask for:
  • No URLs, ticket links or social handles.
  • No brands or logos, Spotify's included.
  • Any text belongs to this track and stays behind the picture.
  • No talking, singing or rapping on camera: 8 seconds won't sync with the lyrics.
  • Song and artist name are optional: the app already shows them.

Four rules are printed on Spotify's help pages. File size, codec and frame rate are not, so we don't guess them.

The same page suggests an online checker to confirm the specs. That's what the tool above does, without sending your file anywhere.

720 × 1280

720p · smallest

1080 × 1920

1080p · sharpest

A note on “tall”. Word for word, a 9:16 frame between 720 and 1080 px tall tops out near 608 × 1080, which would rule out 1080 × 1920, the size Canvas tools export, ours included. We read Spotify's range as 720p to 1080p. If the uploader in Spotify for Artists disagrees with the checker, trust the uploader.

What Spotify asks you to avoid.

Two pages set the rules: the Canvas guidelines, and the content policy that decides what gets removed.

The guidelines

  • “Avoid rapid video cuts or intense flashing graphics.”

The checker counts flashes a second, the way WCAG 2.3.1 does, and flags a file from three.

    Spotify · Canvas guidelines

  • “The edges may get cut off on some phones.”

Turn on the phone-crop overlay in the checker and keep faces and text inside the dashed box.

    Spotify · Canvas guidelines

  • “Choose footage without talking, singing, or rapping.”

A loop this short won't sync with the lyrics.

    Spotify · Canvas guidelines

  • “Consider excluding your song and artist name.”

The Now Playing view already shows both.

    Spotify · Canvas guidelines

The content policy

  • “Avoid directing people to any websites or URLs, ticket vendors, and encouraging follows or likes on social media.”

No links, no handles, no “follow me”.

    Spotify · Canvas content policy

  • “Any text must be relevant to the specific track and not distract from your underlying image/artwork.”

The same line bars text that promotes brands, “including use of Spotify’s logo”.

    Spotify · Canvas content policy

  • “We might remove your Canvas if it's used for overly promotional purposes.”

So a watermark with a web address is a risk. Loopwalk's Canvas export carries no watermark.

    Spotify · Canvas content policy

The three loops Spotify names.

The checker's loop-seam score tells them apart: it compares the last frame with the first.

  • Continuous

The last frame flows into the first, so the restart doesn't show. The hardest one to make: every moving thing has to come back to where it started.

  • Hard cut

“Clear edit points (they can be artfully disguised).”

The clip restarts with a visible cut. Land the cut on a beat or a fast move and it reads as an edit.

  • Rebound

“Plays your clip forwards, then reverses it.”

Any clip works, since the ends always meet. Motion runs backwards on the way back, so skip walking people and falling water.

Loopwalk's export is a hard cut. It plays from where you put the playhead, then starts again from the same frame. Put the playhead on the chorus, export, and score the seam here.

Loop types: Spotify Canvas guidelines

Want a Canvas that moves with your drums? Render it from the song.

Upload the track. We split it into stems and render the Canvas from them. The kicks roll a wave through the bars and the bass lights the rays. You pick where the loop starts.

The Canvas never carries a watermark or a web address.

Canvas not working?

Spotify's help pages split this in two: the upload fails, or the Canvas uploads and doesn't show.

The upload fails

  1. Check the file against the four specs. Spotify says even a slightly wrong length or size can fail. Run the checker.
  2. Upload from the Spotify for Artists mobile app instead. If you already use it, reinstall it to get the latest version.
  3. Still failing? Contact Spotify for Artists support.
  4. Check who you are on the release. The first main artist on the track, the main artist on both track and release, or a team member with the Admin or Editor role can add a Canvas.

Spotify · Fix a Spotify Canvas upload error · Adding a Canvas to Spotify

It uploads but doesn't show

  1. Canvas plays only in the Spotify mobile app: iOS 12+ or Android 6.0+.
  2. In Settings and privacy, under Content and display, turn Canvas on.
  3. Under Data-saving and offline, set Data Saver to off.
  4. Labels with split rights can add a Canvas only to the versions they own. Make sure you're looking at yours.
  5. Canvas shows to listeners in some countries only. Spotify lists them on its help page.
  6. A Canvas that breaks the Spotify Platform Rules is removed.
